Project Overview

The K-Pop Accent Web App is a proof-of-concept interactive visualization of academic research on K-pop idols' English accents. The project transforms the findings from the paper "I Want to Be Born with That Pronunciation": Metalinguistic Comments About K-Pop Idols' Inner Circle Accents by Jihye Kim and Luoxiangyu Zhang into an accessible, engaging digital experience.

Core Purpose

📚

Making Research Accessible

Breaking down barriers to academic knowledge by presenting research findings in a visually appealing, interactive format that doesn't require specialized knowledge of research methods or academic conventions.

📊

Interactive Visualization

Transforming static research data into dynamic, interactive visualizations that allow users to explore the findings in ways that traditional reading cannot facilitate.

🔬

Proof of Concept

Demonstrating how academic research can be made more engaging and accessible through web technologies, serving as a template for future research visualization projects.

About the Research

The original research paper examines how K-pop fans perceive and evaluate the English accents of K-pop idols, particularly those from "inner circle" countries like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. The researchers collected and analyzed 602 comments from YouTube videos featuring K-pop idols speaking English.

Key Findings

  • Overwhelmingly Positive Sentiment: 88.1% of comments express positive sentiment toward idols' English accents, with only 1.3% expressing negative sentiment.
  • Focus on Social Attractiveness: 33.6% of comments focus on how the accent sounds "cool," "sexy," or otherwise socially attractive.
  • Emphasis on Nativeness: 30.3% of comments discuss how "native-like" the idol's accent sounds, often praising accents that sound like they're from inner circle countries.
  • Linguistic Stereotyping: Comments often associate certain accent features with positive social characteristics, reinforcing linguistic stereotypes.
  • Desire for Native-Like Pronunciation: Many comments express a desire to have pronunciation like the idols, particularly those with inner circle accents.

Research Context

The research is situated within the field of World Englishes, which examines how English is used in different contexts around the world. Kachru's Three Circles model categorizes English-speaking countries into:

  • Inner Circle: Countries where English is the primary language (US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.)
  • Outer Circle: Countries where English is an official language but not the primary one (India, Singapore, etc.)
  • Expanding Circle: Countries where English is learned as a foreign language (Korea, Japan, etc.)

The research examines how fans perceive idols' accents from inner circle countries, and how these perceptions reflect broader attitudes toward different varieties of English.

Technical Implementation

This web application was built using modern web technologies to create an interactive, engaging experience:

SvelteKit

A framework for building web applications with a focus on developer experience and end-user performance.

Chart.js

A JavaScript library for creating interactive data visualizations.

CSS Custom Properties

Used to implement a consistent design system across the application.

Responsive Design

Ensures the application works well on devices of all sizes, from mobile phones to desktop computers.

Future Possibilities

This proof of concept demonstrates the potential for making academic research more accessible through interactive web applications. Future developments could include:

  • Expanded Dataset: Incorporating more comments and videos for a more comprehensive analysis.
  • Advanced Visualizations: Creating more complex interactive visualizations to explore relationships between different factors.
  • User Contributions: Allowing users to contribute their own observations and analyses.
  • Multilingual Support: Enhancing support for Korean content and potentially adding other languages.
  • Educational Resources: Expanding the educational content to provide more context about linguistics and language attitudes.
